In 1964, Ford unveiled a complete redesign of its entire lineup, ranging from the compact Falcon to the full-sized Galaxie and the upscale Thunderbird. These new models featured a sleek, well-proportioned design and a variety of impressive V8 engines, from the compact 289 to the powerful 427. The Galaxie 500 XL, with its aerodynamic sculpting aimed at enhancing NASCAR performance, presented a lower, wider stance, making it a favorite among buyers seeking a stylish, muscular cruiser. The extraordinary journey of this particular vehicle began in February 1964, when Edgar Spenner, a farmer from Centralia, Illinois, attended the annual Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place. Captivated by the new Galaxie 500 XL Convertible on display at the Ford booth, he decided to place an order right then and there. Defying the typical Midwestern farmer stereotype, he opted for the high-end 500 XL trim and included numerous options, such as the X-code 352ci Interceptor V8, power steering, Cruise-O-Matic transmission, rear fender skirts, and a remote-operated rearview mirror. He also chose an attractive color combination of Prairie Bronze (code P) paired with Medium Palomino Trim (code 89) and a white top. Sadly, after driving his beautiful new Galaxie home from Bill-Rick Ford, Edgar was disappointed with the feel of the power steering. He contacted the dealership to inquire about exchanging it for another vehicle. It seems the dealer offered him a reduced trade-in value, likely leading to a contentious discussion. Frustrated with his Ford, Edgar parked the car in his barn after just 73 miles and left it there until his passing. Eventually, the car made its way to a prestigious museum, where it stayed until we acquired it.
